The Kettlebell - What is it?
The kettlebell has been described as a bowling ball with a handle. It is virtually a hunk of iron with a handle attached to it.
Why would You want to use a Kettlebell?
Kettlebell training can bring you extreme total body fitness. Total body strength, endurance, flexibility and fat loss. The difference between training with a kettlebell and weight training. The unique shape and exercises make your body have to adapt to accelerating and decelerating forces you don't get in traditional weight lifting. Your core muscles, stabilizing muscles, and tendons will become stronger over time.
Kettlebell exercises are ballistic you are incorporating so many muscle groups, tendon strength just to complete each exercise. If you know anything about building muscle and losing fat it should be that the more muscle groups you use at each exercise the more lean muscle you are building which also means the more fat you are losing.
The kettlebell Swing what exactly is it?
The kettlebell swing is pretty much what it's name suggests you are swinging a kettlebell from between your legs up to chest level. Your arms should stay straight but loose you are generating all your power through you hips. Although it looks and sounds easy like anything else there is a right and wrong way to use kettlebells. I would reccommend learning the proper techniques for training with kettlebells before jumping in.
The basics of doing the Kettlebell Swing:
1) Keep your head up
2) Keep your back alignment straight
3) Sit back as if you are going to sit in a chair - Don't dip down.
4) Extend your hips and knees fully at the top your body will then form a straight line.
5) The kettlebell at the top of the swing (chest level) forms an extension of the straight and loose arm.
If you remember earlier I mentioned you could do Swings with a dumbbell and you can but the truth is for all around fitness and fat loss the Kettlebell is just much more effective.
So what would be the perfect way to use the Kettlebell Swing?
For total body conditioning and fat loss nothing beats doing swings with the Interval Training style.
Depending on your conditioning level Interval bursts of 30-60 seconds with short rest periods in between for a minimum of 10 minutes as your conditioning improves decrease the rest intervals in between.
Always get a physical and doctors okay before starting any exercise program.
Remember a sound clean nutrition program has to go hand in hand with your exercise or you will never see the results you are after.
Remember in describing how to do the Kettlebell Swing I said sit back as if you are sitting in a chair? here is a way to train yourself for using good form for that. While standing place the edges of your hands into the creases at the top of your thighs. Press your hands hard into the creases and stick your buut out while keeping your weight on your heels.
This teaches you to go down by folding at your hips rather than bending your back and risking a back injury.

Water: Your Best Defense Against Dehydration, Wrinkles By Janet Martin
What’s the best thing to drink before, during, and after a good workout? A cup of coffee? A can of your favorite soft drink? Or any sports drink for that matter? The answer, my friend, is plain water.
Experts say drinking water is good when you’re exercising since it combats dehydration and replaces vital fluids that are lost during the process.
“We can’t overstate the importance of guzzling water, particularly if you exercise. Even a tiny water deficit can radically affect how your body performs. When you don’t drink enough, your blood doesn’t flow properly, and your digestive track doesn’t run smoothly,” according to Suzanne Schlosberg and Liz Naporent in “Fitness for Dummies.”
Some people avoid cold water believing that it will lead to cramps. Others think that drinking water will bloat the body and affect an athlete’s performance. In reality, cramps are caused by dehydration and drinking water prevents this from happening.
Boxers, dancers, football players, and long-distance runners may lose as much as five pounds of water in hot, humid weather. If that amount isn’t replaced, dehydration and exhaustion set in and that could be fatal.
You can tell if you’re dehydrated since you get tired easily and lack energy. Other signs of dehydration are headache, dry mouth, little or no urine, dizziness, lightheadedness, and dark or bad smelling urine. This could eventually lead to urinary tract infections, kidney infections, and kidney stones.
“You’ve probably heard that you need to drink 8 glasses of water a day, 9 to 13 if you’re exercising. Here’s where that number comes from: You typically lose 10 cups of water per day – 2 cups to sweating and evaporation, 2 cups to breathing, and 6 cups to waste removal. You can replace up to 2 cups through the water in the foods that you eat, but you have to make up the remaining 8 cups by drinking fluids – water being the best choice,” Schlosberg and Naporent added.
Drinking lots of water is also important for healthy skin. Aside from flushing out toxins from the body, water is essential in maintaining your skin’s suppleness and elasticity. Lack of water can make your skin look old, leathery, and full of wrinkles. That’s why you need to drink enough water to look good.
“Drinking at least 8 glasses of water is no gimmick; it is really the easiest way to improve your skin! Not only will drinking water hydrate your skin, giving it a more supple feel and a lovely glow, but drinking plenty of water will improve your health overall. Nearly everyone suffers from acne. Its something that plagues us all sooner or later. The causes of acne have been linked to hormones, age groups, and Candida problems which is in my opinion the main cause of acne. So lets start there.
Q. What is acne?
A. Acne is an inflammatory disease of the sebaceous glands which when inflamed causes acne to occur. This is characterized by pimples on the face, back, chest, and other areas of the body.
Let’s not get into complex terms. Instead lets focus on the fact that it occurs because of an inflammation. Some believe this originates during the teenage years and continues until they the person reaches their early 20s. This may be true in most cases BUT many people continue to have acne long after this period!
This is where puberty and hormones can no longer be used as an excuse and a REAL reason needs to be found. The reason acne occurs is because of a Candida overgrowth which causes the sebaceous glands to become inflamed which in turn leads to acne.
Q. What is the Candida?
A. The Candida is a yeast that is located in your digestive system and has the ability to grow given the right circumstances. When it does grow, it stimulates acne.
Q. What causes the Candida to grow?

I recommend you eat real garlic and not garlic in capsules of the the popular product 'garlique'. The reason for this is because eating the original is best in my opinion and from my own experiments. The other products which are 'sugar coated' if you will are not the original garlic and are processed making the original and pure garlic nearly non-existent.
I though you mentioned something about an experiment?
Yes I did! As I mentioned earlier I used to suffer from acne. It was obviously something I was embarrassed to have and wanted to do something about it. I have always been a skeptic for moisturizer products out there because they only deal with the outside portion of your problems. I always knew the problems I had (in this case acne) originating from the inside. I began doing research and found clues and tips on how to deal with it.
What I did: I brought garlic cloves and a bottle of RAW UNFILTERED ORGANIC APPLE CIDER VINEGAR for around $5 and slowly began drinking the recommended dosage. NOTE: Do not try to drink this substance without first mixing it with large amounts of water. It is FAR too acidic to consume and can be very dangerous if it isn’t mixed with water. That doesn’t mean its unhealthy for you. It is acidic BUT when used correctly it is VERY beneficial for your health.
After about 2 weeks I saw a difference on my face. I had less acne and less 'breakouts'. I was very amazed at its effect. Though it wasn’t the tastiest drink for me, I still continued on and at one point I just stopped drinking it.
Around 3 weeks after I had STOPPED drinking it. As a result my acne had come back and I began having more breakouts. I knew it was because I had stopped drinking the apple cider vinegar.
HOWEVER
I also realized the cause of my acne was in fact my habit of eating too much sugar. As I said before sugar is one of the prime reasons for the Candida growth, which stimulates acne. I apologize for not mentioning that fact before.
CONCLUSION
Even though I was drinking apple cider vinegar and my acne was lessening, it was still existent because I had continued consuming large amounts of sugar while drinking the apple cider vinegar. In a way I guess you can say I was feeding and killing my Candida at the same time.
It was when I stopped drinking the apple cider vinegar and continued consuming large amounts of sugar that I saw the change. I began to see a lot of acne on my face and it was as clear as day what it was because of.
Drink apple cider vinegar if you can. The reason I say if you can is because there are some people out there who can feel a burning sensation when they drink it which is a sign of a weak stomach and acidity that is only increased when you consume apple cider vinegar. In this case you can:
Mix less apple cider vinegar with more water and see that works. If the burning continues STOP DOING IT!
As for garlic I do not believe there is any reason for anyone to avoid this product other than the fact that it gives you bad breath. Yet with all its health benefits i'll gladly put up with bad breath.
Although the advice I mention above is my own based on personal experience and research I still recommend you consult with your doctor if you are unsure about apple cider vinegar and garlic. I am not sure if many doctors know about these amazing products because many doctors are used to 'promoting' conventional products like drugs and are not familiar with apple cider vinegar (garlic is more conventional but in this case VERY beneficial).
If by some rare chance you are unable to consume the products mentioned above there are other things that help 'CLEANSE' your body of acne. Notice I said cleanse.
This is quite possibly the most effective thing that you can do. Cleansing can be done one of two ways:
1) Sweat - Your body sweats and releases toxins stored in your your body that have accumilated through the products you have consumed and even the air you breath (depending on where you live). Sweating is very simple. You can exercise, go to a sauna (which I recommend), or even perform manual tasks that cause sweat to occur.
2) Fasting - This means you do not eat for a certain period of time. The most effective fasts can be anywhere from 3-7 days and if you can pull that pull that off (7 days) then my hat goes out to you!
Remember acne originates from the inside, not out. In order to get rid of it you have to clean your body from the inside because if you have acne, it means that some imbalance is taking place within you. The products and methods mentioned above do a GREAT job of helping you clean your body.
Also its important to stop putting in the same products that caused the problem in the first place. I've mentioned several products above that stimulate the Candida into growing. If you cant completely stop consuming those products at least try to lower your consumption of it by at least 50%. As I said before I used to eat alot of sugar and that was the cause of my acne.
Although I am still trying to stop eating sugar, it isn't easy. We're not all perfect, but regardless action needs to be taken in order to get rid of acne. Good luck and best of health!

They are all touted as 'breakthroughs.' They all promise to give you a sexy figure, long life, energy, and vitality. They are the popular diet books found in many bookstores today. And most of them are being gobbled up by people who are sick of their bodies and know the dangers of obesity.
For the poor hopeless souls who have tried just about everything to lose weight, it’s hard to resist these 'miracle' diets with their wild promises. They offer a ray of hope to those who are looking for fast cures to a weighty problem. However, what most people don’t know is that there are no instant ways to get rid of unwanted fat.
'Most books which start off by telling you they are breakthroughs are simply misinforming their readers because there are currently no breakthroughs in the weight loss field,' according to Dr. Jack Yetiv, a nutrition expert and pharmacologist. Just as it took years to build up that bulge, the same amount of time is needed to lose it.
'Many people are unsuccessful at losing weight because they get discouraged with the results. If you don't have realistic expectations, it is easy to become frustrated. Becoming overweight is not an overnight phenomenon; it takes months, even years, to accumulate that added weight. Reversing the process takes an equal amount of time. You have to be willing to invest the time and effort if the weight you want to lose is body fat,' according to Consumer Guide's “Cholesterol: Your Guide for a Healthy Heart.”
Diet programs that assure you of constant weight loss of more than two or three pounds a week without exercise or controlling your eating habits are not being completely honest. As such, it adds more insult to injury to a frustrated dieter who has spent a lot of time and money on a worthless remedy.
But what is even more alarming is the fact that certain diets are nutritionally unsound. That's because they were developed by advertising experts rather than nutritionists. As Paul Insel and Wilton Roth said in “Core Concepts in Health:
'Another factor promoting diet and food faddism is the rapid proliferation of unqualified nutrition consultants. The California Council Against Health Fraud (CCAHF) noted that the number of 'degree mills' offering mail order diplomas in nutrition counseling is rapidly increasing. Graduates advertise themselves as 'nutritional consultants' with academic credentials when they are nothing more than salespeople armed with nutritional misinformation preying on an unsuspecting public.”
To protect yourself from nutrition quackery and food faddism, here are some questions you should ask yourself before trying any diet:
Does it have any real advantages over existing or conventional diets? Most fad diets have a gimmick, such as eating grapefruit or using liquid-protein supplements. Do these gimmicks work or are they only a means of attracting attention to the diet?
Is the diet easy to follow? Fasting, for instance, produces a weight loss but it requires a great deal of will power. Most people cannot keep it up for long.
Does the diet provide any long-term modification of eating habits that will allow the weight loss to be maintained after the diet is over? Many diets, such as liquid-protein diets and fasting, and diet aids such as drugs, can produce weight loss. However, because eating behavior is not changed, the person usually regains the weight.
Does the diet present any hazard to health? Very restrictive diets may lead to malnutrition; others, such as liquid-protein diets, have caused injury and even death.

Nail Salons May Spread Fungal Infections By Janet Martin
Getting a manicure or a pedicure is like playing Russian roulette. If you’re not careful, you could end up with a nasty fungal nail infection that could ruin your nails!
This warning comes from Dr. Marta J. VanBeek, assistant professor, Department of Dermatology at the University of Iowa College of Medicine in Iowa City, who said that while most nail salons conscientiously keep their places clean, some are perfect breeding grounds of stubborn fungi that can compromise your health.
“Look at the salon with cleanliness in mind and ask yourself these questions: Are the stations clean? Does the nail technician wash her hands between clients? Are there dirty implements lying around? If the salon does not appear clean, then move on,' VanBeek said.
Her advice is timely considering the growth of the salon industry that serves millions of people worldwide. In 1995 alone, Americans spent an estimated $5.2 billion on nail services, half a billion more than in 1994, according to the Nails 1995 Fact Book. During that time, there were over 34,000 nails salons across the country – an increase of 2,000 over the previous year.
Today, there are more than 50,000 nail salons in the United States with women (and some men) spending more than $6 billion a year on nail care and cosmetics. That figure doesn’t include the number of beauty salons that offer nail services.
People often go to these salons for artificial nails which are the most requested service, the Fact Book said. At the No. 2 slot are manicures followed by nail jewelry and nail art. Unfortunately, these beauty services harbor an ugly secret: they can give you a bad case of fungal nail infections that are common in the elderly and can spread rapidly from one family member to another.
Removing the cuticle is usually the first step in getting a manicure or a pedicure. New York dermatologists Drs. Herbert P. Goodheart of Mount Sinai Hospital and Hendrik Uyttendaele of Columbia University Medical Center said this is not a good idea since it can lead to inflammation and infections of the surrounding tissue and nail root, and cause permanent nail deformities.
'The cuticle is a barrier that protects the skin and the delicate nail matrix, or 'root' of the nail. Pushing back on the cuticle can injure it and expose the paronychium or skin fold around the nail, to bacteria and result in infection,' VanBeek said.
Unclean instruments are another cause for concern. While the states regulate their respective salons and their technicians, they can’t always monitor what’s happening in your area unless something goes wrong. And often it does. In 2000, over 100 infections were traced to footbaths used in nail salons.
“Unclean implements are especially dangerous if the skin around the nail is broken. This can occur with overzealous manicuring - if, for example, too much of the cuticle is cut or pushed back too far. If the cuticle is cut or separated from the fingernail, infectious agents can get into the exposed area,” explained Paula Kurtzweil of the US Food and Drug Administration.
To avoid trouble, see your doctor at the first sign of infection. Many antifungal medications are available but they are generally expensive, contain harsh chemicals that can do more harm than good, and may affect your heart and your liver.

The other day my friends and I were going through our junior school album when we came across our group photograph. People who bite their nails are more likely to get a fungal nail infection than those who don’t. This is because nail biters often injure the cuticle or the skin surrounding the nail, creating numerous entry points for harmful fungi to invade the body.
New York dermatologists Drs. Herbert P. Goodheart of Mount Sinai Hospital and Hendrik Uyttendaele of Columbia University Medical Center said this bad habit should be avoided since the cuticle protects the nail and the skin from bacteria and other possible sources of infection. Once the fungus sets in, it can be difficult to remove and can eventually damage and disfigure your nails. Complications include pain when walking, typing, and writing.
“Nail-biting can cause your fingertips to be red and sore and your cuticles to bleed. Nail-biting also increases your risk for infections around your nail beds and in your mouth. Dental problems and infections of the gums can be caused by nail-biting. Long-term nail-biting can also interfere with normal nail growth and cause deformed nails,” warned WebMD.
Nail biting or onychophagia is a common response to stress, excitement, boredom, or inactivity that affects people of all ages. It is seen in about 50 percent of kids between the ages of 10 and 18 and in 23 percent of young adults aged 18 to 22. By age 30, most people stop biting their nails but 10 percent of men continue this habit.
Children may bite their nails in response to problems at home or at school. Others do it when they quit smoking. Some bite their nails without realizing it when they’re involved in other activities like reading, talking on the phone or watching television.
Famous nail biters include former US First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, singer Lisa Marie Presley, and English singer/songwriter Phil Collins. American writer and poet Dorothy Parker, known for her caustic wit and wisecracks, was also a nail biter as evidenced in her famous quote: “I'm never going to be famous. My name will never be writ large on the roster of Those Who Do Things. I don't do any thing. Not one single thing. I used to bite my nails, but I don't even do that any more.”
